A cable has either snapped or unwound off its drum. The remaining cable is now carrying the whole door plus an off-center load, and it is next in line to go. Stop cycling the door.
The door hit something on the way down — a trash bin, a bike, a tool chest. The door stopped, the drum kept turning, and the cable jumped its groove. The cable is often reusable; the drum alignment is not.
Broken wires standing out from the lay of the cable. This is the pre-failure warning, and it shows at the bottom loop first because that is where water off the driveway sits. Caught here it is a routine parts swap.
Usually a torsion spring let go and took the cable tension with it. The cable is a casualty, not the cause. Both get replaced, and the door is unsafe to operate until they are — this is a 24-hour emergency call, not a next-week appointment.

Residential lift cables are 7x19 or 7x7 galvanized aircraft cable. Standard doors run 1/8-inch with a breaking strength near 1,700 lb; heavy insulated doubles and wood carriage doors get 5/32-inch at roughly 2,800 lb. Length is door height plus about 18 inches for drum wraps and the bottom fixture, so a 7-foot door takes cables a little over 8 feet 6 inches. We stock both diameters cut and swaged, so nothing waits on a supply house.
The sequence on a torsion system: clamp the door to the track, unwind the springs a quarter turn at a time with 1/2-inch solid steel winding bars, loosen the drum set screws, and only then release the cable from the bottom bracket. Screwdrivers and rebar in a winding cone are how people end up in an emergency room — the bars have to match the cone hole diameter and be rated for the load. New cable seats its swaged stop in the drum slot, loops over the bottom bracket pin, and the drums get retorqued onto the shaft flats. Springs are rewound to spec, then the door is leveled by fine-adjusting one drum until both cables carry equal tension.
Extension-spring doors are a different animal, common in Clairemont, La Mesa, and other neighborhoods built before the mid-1970s. Those systems run a lift cable plus a safety cable threaded through the spring itself, and a startling number of the old ones we see have no safety cable at all — nothing to stop a broken spring from launching across the garage. We add them as part of any cable job on an extension system, and it costs very little.
Cables are always replaced in pairs. They wear at the same rate, and pairing a new cable with a four-year-old one guarantees a second service call. While the drums are loose we inspect the bottom brackets, the end bearing plates, and the shaft, and check the springs for the coil separation that says they are near the end of their rated cycle count. A pair of cables on a standard door is one of our lower-cost repairs; drums, brackets, or bearing plates add to that and get quoted before we start.
No. A door hanging on one cable is loaded off-center; the next cycle can pull it off the track, twist the bottom section, or drop it. If a car is trapped inside, call and the dispatcher will tell you whether a manual lift is safe on your setup. Usually it is not, and we would rather send someone within the hour than talk you into lifting 200 lb of unbalanced steel.
Four causes cover nearly all of it: corrosion at the bottom loop, a drum that drifted out of alignment and let the cable ride the groove edge, an obstruction that slacked the cable so it jumped, and a broken spring that dumped the door's weight. Coastal garages skew heavily toward the first one — bare galvanized cable within a mile of the water in Point Loma can show broken strands at six or seven years instead of twelve.
Yes, and it is the cheaper choice. The second cable has the same age, the same corrosion exposure, and the same accumulated cycles as the one that failed. The material difference between one cable and two is small next to a second trip charge three months later.
Often. A door that came down hard usually needs the bottom section and track checked, and the opener force settings reset. If a section creased on the way down, that becomes a panel repair quote. We test balance and run the safety reversal before leaving so you know the whole system is right, not just the part that broke.
Look at the bottom 18 inches of both cables twice a year with the door open — a flashlight and thirty seconds. Broken strands, orange staining, or a flattened-looking cable all mean call now. Keep the floor clear so nothing catches the door on the way down. An annual tune-up covers what you cannot see: drum wrap, set screw torque, bearing wear, and tension balance.
