Phone triage
Our dispatcher asks what you heard and what the door did afterward. A bang followed by silence, a grind, a door hanging crooked — each points somewhere different, and each gets a different answer about whether to unplug the opener before we arrive.

Manual balance test
First thing off the truck: pull the red release cord, lift the door to waist height, let go. A correctly counterbalanced door floats and holds. One that drops or shoots upward tells us the spring system is out of spec before we look at anything else.

Hardware walk
Vertical track plumb within an eighth of an inch top to bottom, hinge numbers matched to their section positions, roller stems seated, cable drums keyed and set screws tight, lag bolts biting solid jamb wood rather than stucco. We photograph what we find.

What Actually Breaks on San Diego Doors
Counterbalance springs. Builder-grade torsion springs are rated near 10,000 cycles, which is roughly seven years at four openings a day. Nearly every "it worked yesterday" call traces back here. Details on sizing and cycle life live on our spring replacement page.
Lift cables. Galvanized aircraft cable in 3/32 in. or 1/8 in. frays at the bottom bracket where water pools, then jumps the drum and drops one side of the door. A cable that has unwound off its drum leaves the door hanging at an angle — stop operating it and book cable repair.
Rollers and hinges. Steel rollers with exposed bearings gall and squeal around year eight. Ten-ball nylon rollers with sealed bearings cost a few dollars more each and run near-silent. Cracked hinge leaves at the number-two and number-three positions are the usual cause of a door that catches at the radius.
Bent sections and struts. A bumper tap at three miles an hour bows the bottom section and pulls the door off track. Single-panel swaps are frequently possible without replacing the whole door — see panel repair.
Climate wear, two flavors. Within a mile of the water in Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and Coronado, salt fog eats galvanizing off hinges, springs, and track fasteners years ahead of schedule; we spec stainless or hot-dip hardware on those repairs. Inland, garages in El Cajon, Santee, and Lakeside hit 115 degrees behind a west-facing door, which cooks the grease out of rollers and softens the vinyl bottom seal until it welds itself to the slab.
When Repair Stops Making Sense
Fix it if the door is under 15 years old, the sections are straight, and the failure is hardware. Springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks, and bottom seals are all inexpensive relative to a new door.
Replace it if two or more sections are bent or rusted through, if the door has no strut and the top section is buckling around the opener bracket, or if repair quotes are stacking past about half the cost of a new insulated door installation.
We say so either way. A technician who quotes a full door when a single hinge would do is not saving you anything.
Straight Answers
Can you repair a door you didn't install?
That is most of our work. We service Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton, Overhead Door, Raynor, Northwest, and plenty of doors whose manufacturer sticker peeled off two decades ago. Hardware is largely interchangeable; where it isn't, we measure and source the match.
My door is noisy but still works. Worth a call?
Yes, and it is a cheap call. Rattling usually means loose hinge lags and dry rollers. Popping at the halfway point often means the door is slightly out of balance and the sections are flexing. Both are inexpensive now and expensive after they take out a section or an opener gear.
Do you charge extra at night or on Sunday?
No. Same flat rate at 2am Sunday as at 10am Wednesday, no holiday surcharge, no trip minimum tacked on for outlying addresses in Chula Vista, Ramona, or Fallbrook.
How long will the technician be at my house?
Spring and cable jobs average 60 to 90 minutes. Roller and hinge replacement on a double door runs about an hour. Off-track corrections vary widely — a clean re-track takes 45 minutes, one with a bent track and a twisted section can take three hours.
Is anything covered under a manufacturer warranty?
Occasionally. Steel sections often carry 10-year or limited-lifetime finish coverage, and openers typically carry one to five years on parts. Bring us the model and install date and we will check before quoting you for something the factory owes you.
